AVImark alternatives: what practices move to, and why
AVImark rates 4.1 on Capterra and the recurring complaint is age, not capability. If you are looking to leave, here is where practices go and what the move involves.
The short version
Most practices leaving AVImark are leaving the server, not the software. Settle that question first and the shortlist halves.
Best for: Practices on AVImark weighing a move, particularly away from on-premise.
Strengths
- Works offline, which still matters in rural practice
- Staff often already know it
- Data stays physically on your own server
Trade-offs
- Users report slowdowns, crashes and server downtime
- Widely described as dated and repeatedly patched rather than rebuilt
- Server, backups and hardware stay your responsibility
AVImark holds a 4.1 out of 5 across 599 verified Capterra reviews, which tells you it works. Read the reviews themselves and a consistent picture emerges: the complaint is rarely a missing feature. It is that the system is dated, reviewers report it slowing and crashing, and the server goes down.
That matters when choosing a replacement, because it means the thing to fix is usually the deployment model, not the feature list.
Settle the deployment question first
Are you replacing the software, or leaving on-premise hosting entirely? The answer halves the shortlist.
- Staying on-premise keeps data in the building and keeps you working through an outage. It also keeps the server, backups and updates as your job. Given that reviewers report server downtime as a live AVImark complaint, be honest about whether that is your hardware or the software.
- Moving to cloud removes the server, makes multi-site and remote access straightforward, and shifts you to a subscription. It also makes you dependent on your connection.
Where practices go
ezyVet is the highest-rated system we cover, at 4.6 across 276 Capterra reviews. Users praise how customisable it is and how usable it feels. The recurring caveats: estimates do not carry digitally into invoices, and without real configuration effort reviewers describe it as clunky. It is owned by IDEXX.
Provet Cloud (Nordhealth) has a strong European presence. Vetspire is built around structured clinical records. Shepherd is designed around the flow of a general-practice consult. Woovet is cloud and not owned by a diagnostics or distribution group.
That last point is worth a moment. AVImark is a Covetrus product, and ezyVet is IDEXX. If part of what you dislike is being inside a large supplier's estate, moving between those two does not change that. We cover the ownership question in full in who owns your practice management system.
The option people skip
If your real complaint is documentation load rather than the software, replacing the whole system is an expensive way to solve it. Tools that sit alongside your existing setup and draft the record from the consult address that specific problem without a migration. Rule that in or out before committing to months of disruption.
What actually moves
The part practices underestimate is the data, not the software. Structured records (clients, patients, appointments, invoices, reminders) transfer well. Clinical notes usually transfer but can arrive flattened, with SOAP structure collapsed into plain text. Attachments are the most variable: files rarely vanish, but they can arrive without the link to the right patient.
Ask any vendor for a test migration against a copy of your real database before you sign. What comes back tells you more than every demo combined. We have written the full version of this in what actually transfers when you change practice software.
